How it works

Core logic

Bollinger Bands plot 2 standard deviations above and below a 20-period moving average. When price drops to the lower band, it is statistically oversold — buy. When it returns to the middle band or upper band, sell. About 95% of price action stays within the bands.

When it profits

Range-bound markets with consistent volatility. Works well on higher timeframes (4h, daily) where mean reversion is stronger.

When it loses

Trending markets where price 'walks the band' — stays at the lower band and keeps dropping, or rides the upper band without pulling back.

Parameters

Key settings to configure

Bollinger Band period

Number of periods for the moving average center line

Default: 20 · Min: 10 · Max: 50

Standard deviations

Band width — 2 is standard, 2.5 for fewer but higher-confidence signals

Default: 2 · Min: 1 · Max: 3

Take profit target

Sell at middle band (safer) or upper band (more profit, less frequent)

Default: middle_band

Timeframe

Higher timeframes have stronger mean reversion

Default: 4h

Risks

What can go wrong

high risk

Trend riding the band

In strong downtrends, price can touch the lower band and keep falling. Each 'oversold' buy signal leads to deeper losses.

medium risk

Volatility expansion

Bands widen during volatile periods, making the lower band a moving target. You may buy at the band only to see it expand further down.

medium risk

Requires filtering

Raw Bollinger Band signals have mediocre win rates. Combining with RSI, volume, or trend filters is necessary for consistent results.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I combine Bollinger Bands with other indicators?

Yes, strongly recommended. Add RSI (buy when RSI < 30 AND price at lower band) or volume confirmation. This filters out many false signals.
